the Snowbound Anthology

“Beyond the fences, the young woman looked across the hills of sand; the great, ancient dunes were no longer shifting with the winds. Bluestem, buffalo grass, grama, Indiangrass, and others had taken hold eons ago and had frozen the Sandhills in time. Where the homesteader failed to tame the wild lands with modern implements, the rancher succeeded simply by letting his cattle graze, like the buffalo before them.”

MY STORY

Andrew S. Pollock

Andrew Stanton Pollock lives in rural Seward County, Nebraska. He grew up on the south side of Lake McConaughy in western Nebraska. Andrew is the co-founder and co-director of the Sandhills Marathon in remote Cherry County, where he spends as much time as he can, fishing and hiking and looking at the stars.

Snowbound

Andrew’s mother, who still lives along Lake McConaughy, spent many of her best days on her family’s ranch in the Sand Hills of Cherry County. Their neighbor Juanita Sullens was stranded alone in her ranch house a few dozen miles from Valentine during the Great Blizzard of 1949. Mrs. Sullens’ husband was in town getting groceries when the snowstorm hit.
